OVERVIEW
Although debit and credit cards are used by many, real money and its design are still significant. The design of currency reflects its country to its citizens as well as travelers. This project involved designing a new currency design for the Japanese government. This design would need to be easily recognizable as Japanese, but not to the point that it is stereotypical and insulting.
SOLUTION
Japanese patterns and designs were incorporated into the final design. Japan’s national fish, the koi, is used on the front design. Two of them swimming in a circle are pictured, creating a sense of balance. The written value of the money and “National Bank of Japan” were placed in the center of the fish, and the traditional Japanese patterns in the background draw the viewer’s eye to them, creating movement. The back of the currency shows an image of a famous Japanese landmark, Itsukushima Shrine.
